Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS)

Published by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) — supports study in listed Malaysian universities (including UM)

What it is (official, international-focused)

  • MIS is an international scholarship published under MOHE for full-time postgraduate studies (Master’s / PhD) in Malaysia.
  • Applicants must be from the recipient countries list for the MIS year (see “Recipient Countries” tab).
  • MIS supports study at Malaysian public universities and selected private higher education institutions listed under MIS (UM is included).
  • Application is cycle-based (opens/closes by intake year), so always check the official portal for the current cycle status.

Important note

This page only lists requirements that are explicitly published by MOHE in the MIS guidelines. Final selection depends on MOHE assessment and compliance with current-cycle instructions on the official portal.

Eligibility criteria (as published in MIS Guidelines)

Level of study

Master’s degree or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) — full-time only.

Age limit

Master’s: not more than 40 years old at time of application.
PhD: not more than 45 years old at time of application.

Academic requirement

Master’s: CGPA 3.00 / 2nd Class Upper (Honours) or higher at Bachelor’s level.
PhD: CGPA 3.00 / excellent results at Master’s level (related field).

English proficiency

IELTS 6.0+ OR TOEFL (PBT) 550+ OR official letter confirming English medium instruction for previous degree(s).

Research proposal rule

Master’s by Research and PhD applicants must submit a written research proposal with a minimum of 1,000 words, relevant to intended field of study.
